The gig economy

Uber, Deliveroo and Airbnb

Phil Waterhouse asks whether new service companies benefit all their stakeholders, framing his analysis around a sample exam question

One of the latest pieces of business jargon is to talk about ‘the platform’ as being where the money is. Airbnb is the biggest hotel in the world and owns no rooms. Uber is the biggest limo service and owns no cars. Everyone wants to be ‘the platform’ — which is the latest way of reaching out to and interacting with your customer base.

The majority of business exams expect you to take a view and then justify it. The final AQA BUSS4 exam had e-commerce as its pre-release theme, and this topic gave students ample opportunity to investigate and research the impact of the rise of e-commerce and apps on our everyday lives. Most students showed excellent understanding of the growth of businesses such as Uber, Airbnb and Deliveroo, and other examples that have emerged over the last 10 years.
