CASE STUDY

H is for Hamleys

Phil Waterhouse looks at the challenges facing a toy store that is also one of London’s top tourist attractions

Hamleys toy store is the oldest toy shop in the world. Founded in 1760, in Holborn, London, the company moved to Regent Street in 1881. One hundred years later it moved down the same street to a location that lays claim to being the largest toy store in the world, with over 50,000 product lines in store. Hamleys has seven floors of toys to explore and play with, and its location in one of London’s busiest shopping streets attracts over 5 million visitors a year to the store.

On paper, the toy sector should be a fantastic business opportunity. The goods will always be in demand from a very important market segment. However, it is also one of the most seasonal businesses there is. While birthdays happen all year round, much of Hamleys’ business (and revenue) occurs in the 3 months leading up to Christmas.
