Frederick Herzberg was an academic and author specialising in human motivation

People have two sets of needs: hygiene factors that prevent discomfort and motivators that stimulate engagement in the work process.

Example: hygiene factors include pay and job security. These overlap with Maslow’s lower-order needs. Motivators come from within the individual, such as getting a sense of achievement from what you do.
