EXAM FOCUS

Application: the misunderstood assessment objective

Phil Waterhouse explains how to get top marks in application

The skill of application is one that is crucial to your exam success, but arguably it is the least understood of the four key skills. It typically accounts for 25% of overall marks, but unfortunately many students fail to understand its significance and how to demonstrate it within their answers. This article looks at how you can approach and address application in your responses. While I will draw on the AQA exams specifically, the overall nature of application is the same across all exam boards.

It is likely that, by now, you will have spent lots of time mastering the key terms and concepts of the course. You are likely to have a glossary of key terms and are ready to define any topic. While examiners use the mantra ‘knowledge is the gatekeeper’ and showing you recognise the subject-specific terminology is key to higher marks, at the end of the day, only 20% of your overall marks will be assessed against assessment objective 1 (AO1): knowledge.
