Calcium carbonate is a valuable raw material for many industrial processes and agricultural applications. The processing of the various calcium compounds involves both endothermic and exothermic reactions. Calcium compounds are used to reduce the environmental impact of pollution levels, for example in the removal of sulfur dioxide from flue gases and lowering the acidity of lakes caused by acid rain.
