Organic structures and mechanisms

Stuart Thompson explains some important terminology used in organic chemistry mechanisms

Organic chemistry is a vast subject, which studies the nature of carbon-containing chemicals. One area of this subject is chemical reactivity, i.e. what happens between two organic chemicals when they meet under certain conditions. Organic chemists analyse reactions and propose mechanisms in order to rationalise chemical products. Understanding reaction mechanisms allows chemists to develop synthetic strategies in order to achieve the desired products.

Organic chemistry mechanisms are fascinating, dynamic, logical and often debated using empirical observation. Some important considerations and features of mechanisms are geometric shape and electronic structure.
