The Great Gatsby is an AS text on OCR and AQA B, and an A2 text on Edexcel

Nick Carraway, the man F. Scott Fitzgerald chose to narrate his story of the death of Jay Gatsby, apparently accepts the inquest’s conclusion that George Wilson, ‘a man deranged by grief’, shot Gatsby and then turned the gun on himself. However, Carraway admits that this conclusion was reached ‘in order that the case might remain in its simplest form’, suggesting that the whole affair is a lot more complex. Nick seems to assume that the authorities covered up the truth rather than probed into the private affairs of Gatsby or possibly the Buchanan family. However, if we probe more deeply into Fitzgerald’s story, darker possibilities come to the surface.
