In March 1870 Thomas Hardy was an aspiring author but was employed as an architect’s clerk. He was sent to survey the parish church of St Juliot, near Boscastle in North Cornwall, with a view to its restoration. Here he encountered the rector’s sister-in-law, Emma Lavinia Gifford, and was captivated by her boldness and exuberance.
