Hannah Lowe

Hannah Lowe was born in Ilford to an English mother and Jamaican–Chinese father. She studied American literature at the University of Sussex, and is currently completing a PhD in creative writing at Newcastle University. Her work has won several awards and been published in various literary magazines, and she has performed at literary festivals around the UK.

Hannah Lowe’s first book of poems, Chick, was shortlisted for the 2013 Forward Best First Collection Prize. It takes you on a journey round her father, who disappeared at night to play cards or dice in London’s old East End to support his family, an unstable and dangerous existence that took its toll on his physical and mental health. ‘Chick’ was his gambling nickname.
