Those who can, teach English

Sarah McLoughlin argues that teaching English is a rewarding career that also offers many opportunities for professional development

E ver heard the phrase ‘Those who can, do; those who can’t, teach’? This lazy stereotype could not be further from the truth of modern teaching. Teaching is a career that is varied, challenging and rewarding. Teachers work hard, but every day is different and none of them are dull.

If you choose to study English at university, clearly you have a love of language and literature. You will have the chance to study texts in depth and discuss them with other like-minded enthusiasts, but I guarantee that a Year 9 class will have responses to their first encounter with Jane Eyre that you will never have considered in your seminars. Teaching English offers the opportunity to pass your passion for your subject on to others, and to gain new insights from their fresh perspectives.
