Knights must win their spurs, younger sons must seek their fortune and young women must marry and live happily ever after. Young people growing into maturity were a familiar trope of folk and fairy tales before the theme emerged in some of the earliest novels, though the generic term ‘Bildungsroman’ was not coined until 1819.
