PROSPECTS

A career in cultural heritage

If you are a good communicator and enjoy visiting heritage sites, museums and visitor attractions, Harriet Purkis suggests you could look at a career in this area and use your English skills to help create innovative exhibitions for public engagement

Imperial War Museum, London

Do you remember your school trips to museums as positive experiences? Have you visited Harry Potter World, Shakespeare’s birthplace or the Brontë Parsonage Museum, for instance? Museums are increasingly focused on their visitors’ experience, rather than just conserving artefacts. Venues aim to excite, educate and engage people in lively exhibitions, activities and events. Museum collections need to be brought to life and explained in a way that enables visitors to understand their significance and the stories behind the objects.

Studying English develops skills that are extremely useful for jobs in the leisure industry, such as written and spoken communication skills, summarising and proofreading.
