Heritage and promotion of place

This article considers the way in which heritage is used to market places as resources and the issues that surround this interpretation of place. It is relevant to rebranding and regeneration as well as leisure and tourism topics.

When we think of heritage we probably think of history — people and events from the past. We may not automatically think of geography. However, heritage is a major element in the way places promote and market themselves and it plays an increasingly important role in many types of urban and rural regeneration. Elements of both local history and geography may be utilised in efforts to promote places.
