Going bananas

The AQA option ‘Food supply issues’ is an interesting part of the AS specification. In addition to supply and demand issues, it provides a link to debates about globalisation. Edexcel also has a food supply option (Life on the margins) at A2 and covers globalisation at AS. In reading through the specifications I was reminded that world trade in food in 2007 was worth $1.1 trillion ($1,128,000,000,000), which is 6.7% of total trade, at a similar level to automotive products, chemicals or computers. Only oil (15%) was significantly higher, so food is one of the sinews that hold the world economy together. See the websites of the UN Conference on Trade and Development, and the World Trade Organization.
