Part 1 Development

Managing urban change is a core topic at A-level. Inner cities are much studied, but management issues arise in suburbs too. Part 1 of this article describes the development of suburbs and the issues arising from the way they have grown. Part 2 will look at some common assumptions about suburbs and at the challenges they face today.

Before reading any further, write down what you understand to be a ‘suburb’. I expect you’ve included descriptions of the outward expansion of urban places and of land use dominated by low-density housing. Did you include comments about social characteristics including ethnicity? And what about suburbs in urban locations around the world?

The Dictionary of Human Geography defines a suburb as ‘An outer district lying within the commuting zone of an urban area.’ How helpful is this definition?
