Impacts on the Arctic

This article discusses global warming in the Arctic and possible impacts on humans, ecology and biodiversity. It is useful for topics on cold environments, global warming and climate change. Edexcel Unit 1 has a compulsory case study on the environmental and ecological impact of climate change on the Arctic.

The Arctic is a fragile region, home to rare species of animal and plant, and to indigenous peoples with their own cultures and traditions. Despite the fact that few of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions originate from the Arctic, some of the largest changes in climate are being observed in the region. This is threatening global biodiversity and the way of life of indigenous people.

Because the Arctic is so sensitive to change it is seen as global warming’s ‘canary in a coal mine’ — awarning to the rest of the world of change to come in the future.
