The NAO and UK winters

The North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) is a climate feature that has special importance for the UK. It indicates variability in the strength of the westerly air flow crossing the Atlantic.

When the NAO is strong, the mid-latitude jet stream tends to run southwest–northeast, pulling a large number of mid-latitude depression systems (or cyclones) across the UK.
