Polish migrants to the UK

The movement of people across borders is an issue affecting societies and governments around the world, which is why migration is an A-level and IB topic. This article investigates the reasons behind and the impacts of one major migratory movement

There was a steady flow of migrants into the UK from the EU for the 10 years leading up to 2003, at around 61,000 people per year. However, in 2004 migration in-flows jumped to 125,000 per year, and they rose to nearly 200,000 by 2007 (Figure 1). The migrants came from countries across the EU, but one nationality dominated: in recent years, Poles have made up two thirds of the in-flow from EU countries. In the last 10 years, the migration of Polish nationals to Britain has led to an increase in the Polish-born population of the UK from 75,000 to 532,000.
