A research paper from 1997 states: Fieldwork is widely regarded as an essential part of geography education… and it represents one of the most effective and enjoyable forms of teaching and learning for both staff and students. (‘Fieldwork in Geography Teaching: a critical review of the literature and approaches,’ Journal of Geography in Higher Education, Vol. 21, No. 3, 1997)
