As new statistics show a rise in birth rates. Simon Oakes gives an A-level geography perspective on what this means for the country

Babies are big news in Britain. Just 3 weeks after the new royal arrival, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported a mini baby boom. Births in 2012 reached their highest level for 40 years. Other headline-grabbing trends include:

■ a new record population of 63.7 million as a result of migration and higher numbers of births
