making the grade: geographical skills

Fieldwork and skills

A glossary

The terminology and specialist language associated with fieldwork can be challenging, but correct use of technical terms is essential if you want to get good marks. This Geographical Skills provides an up-to-date glossary of terms to support your fieldwork and research, in the field and in the exam

Just over 10 years ago Practical Geography (as Geographical Skills was then called) produced a fieldwork glossary (GEOGRAPHY REVIEW Vol. 17, No. 3). Since then the technology available to us in our fieldwork has improved a lot. There have been fewer changes in fieldwork approaches and vocabulary over the last 10 years, but some new dataprocessing and analysis skills, especially those linked to new technology, have become important. In 2004, for instance, there was no reference to GIS or mobile technology, and no secondary research using the internet. This Geographical Skills is an update on field and skills terminology.
