Dengue fever is a painful flu-like disease that can leave sufferers feeling unwell for long periods of time even after the virus has gone. In some cases, dengue fever can develop into dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF) which is potentially fatal.

Since my first GEOGRAPHY REVIEW article on the disease in 2012 (Vol. 26, No. 2), the global prevalence of dengue fever has increased. There are now an estimated 390 million infections annually and 3.9 billion people, in 128 countries, are at risk of infection with dengue viruses.
