The case for nuclear power has two main arguments: nuclear generation helps provide base load (a consistent, unbroken supply of energy) and it contributes to energy security, allowing nations to rely less on other countries for their energy supplies. More recently the nuclear industry has also emphasised its clean energy credentials and its potential role in moving away from dependence on fossil fuels (Box 1 and Figure 1).
