What is Extinction Rebellion, and what impact is the movement having?

Extinction Rebellion (XR) was founded in 2018 by environmental campaigners.This non-violent protest movement, with headquarters in north London, aims to influence how the UK and other state governments manage climate change. It has three main overlapping goals, which are to make governments:

■ tell the truth by declaring a climate and ecological emergency (which the UK government has now done, see Box 1)
