Digital divides

Technology and digital skills have helped build resilience during the Covid-19 crisis. But this has thrown a spotlight on digital divides at varying scales

Adigital divide develops whenever there is unequal access to ICT (information and communications technology). Digital divides are found in different contexts at varying geographic scales:

■ There is a broad digital divide between the world’s richest and poorest regions. On average, 88% of people in Europe were broadband or mobile internet users in 2020. The corresponding average across Africa’s 54 sovereign states was just 39%.
