Over the last year, many of us have not been able to travel to the countryside due to the restrictions related to Covid-19. In more normal times, we perhaps forget the fight that took place to ensure that we can access such locations. In the early twentieth century, workers in the north of England sought to escape the pollution and overcrowding of their industrial cities by taking the train to the nearby Peak District on Sundays. Landowners did not welcome the arrival of these visitors and many sought to limit access to the land, preferring instead to retain these spaces for local landowners and industrialists.
