With the UK government committed to meeting net zero carbon emissions by 2050, every sector of the economy needs a plan of how to decarbonise rapidly. For most industries, this will involve a switch from fossil fuels to renewable alternatives. Farming, however, is in a unique position. Although it currently emits a lot of greenhouse gases (see Box 1), it also has the opportunity to remove carbon from the atmosphere by storing it in soils and trees.

Poor soil management can lead to the loss of carbon from soils, released as CO2 into the atmosphere, or soil erosion.
