MAKING THE GRADE: QUESTION AND ANSWER

Globalisation

Causes and effects

This Question and Answer compares two questions from Pearson Edexcel Paper 2 (Human Geography). The questions focus on the Globalisation topic (Topic 3). One question is about the causes of globalisation and the other considers the effects of globalisation. Causes and effects are easily confused in the examination and this article focuses on this issue. Globalisation is covered by other specifications (see Box 1), although question styles, mark tariffs and command words do vary. The exam comments are the responsibility of GEOGRAPHY REVIEW and have neither been provided nor approved by the examination board. The answers given are not the only possible answers.

In the exam it can be quite easy to confuse ‘cause’ and ‘effect’ when interpreting questions:

Causes are the reasons why something has happened — why a change has taken place, or the details of a process leading to change.
