Solar farms and land-use conflict

Solar farms are increasingly a feature of UK landscapes. They have also been controversial. The Liz Truss government briefly proposed banning them on agricultural land because of a perceived conflict with food production.

The article by Lucy Treasure in this issue outlines innovative ways in which agrivoltaic systems can deliver both energy and food production. This is a growing area. Although largescale agrivoltaic schemes have yet to take off in the UK, France has over 200 agrivoltaic schemes, with many more planned.
