William won the Battle of Hastings through a combination of shrewd public relations work, thorough planning and effective command.

When Edward the Confessor died in 1066 William had already established a claim to the English throne. Supposedly (although the evidence for this is disputed) Harold Godwinson had also promised to support William’s claim when he had been a guest/captive in Normandy in 1064.
