The end of the Second World War in 1945 was not the hopedfor dawn of an era of peace. For the next half century, global diplomacy was dominated by the Cold War between the USA and the USSR, which affected nearly every nation on earth. A nuclear war nearly occurred during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962 and there were flashpoints in Berlin, Korea and Vietnam. After the collapse of the USSR and the end of the Cold War in 1991, world leaders had to shift focus and deal with many other conflicts, including those in Yugoslavia and Iraq, and with the rise of global terrorism.

The exam has three essay questions and you must answer two of them. This exam gives you an opportunity to demonstrate that you can communicate the knowledge and understanding that you have learned in this unit, as well as the historical skills you have accumulated over your entire A-level course.
