What it takes to be on the British triathlon team

Mark Buckingham provides an insight into the life of a professional sportsperson and shows the unique demands of training for three challenging endurance sports

For 5 years I have lived and breathed triathlon. I ‘found’ the event late in my sporting career after switching from track and field at the age of 25. The British Triathlon Federation targeted me after they saw me contest the British Duathlon (run/bike/run) Championship, where I finished third.

After stepping off the podium the first question I was asked by the head coach of the British Triathlon development squad was ‘what’s your swimming like Mark?’, to which I replied ‘not very good’. The coach explained that British Triathlon was looking to bring elite runners into the sport, as the run discipline of triathlon had started to dominate at world level.
