Memory models

Using the example of Hal Robson-Kanu’s spectacular goal at Euro 2016, John Ireland explores two theories that are new to the specification: the multi-store memory model incorporating the role of selective attention presented by Atkinson and Shiffren (1968), and Craik and Lockhart’s levels of processing model (1972)

The summer of 2016 was filled with memorable sporting perfomances: Andy Murray secured the Wimbledon and Olympic tennis titles, England’s rugby union team won the Six Nations grand slam and whitewashed Australia, and Great Britain and Northern Ireland became an Olympic superpower with second place in the medals table capped by the women’s hockey team winning a spectacular gold against the technically superior Netherlands.

During Wales’ progression to the Euro 2016 semi-finals, Hal Robson-Kanu scored a goal in their 3–1 quarter-final win against Belgium that was voted the best of the tournament. This goal in a structured passage of creative team play provides an excellent practical focus for the topic of memory models.
