Stats for endurance runners

Olympic athlete Sonia Samuels explains the vital statistics used to measure progress and predict performance of top-class endurance runners

Endurance running is not just about putting in the miles — it has become much more scientific in recent years. Endurance runners obsess over numbers, from personal bests (PBs), to average pace, to race weight and heart rate (HR).

Physiological testing is the starting point for developing a training programme specific to the athlete and their sport. Testing identifies the athlete’s physiological strengths and weaknesses. With the use of physiological testing, such as GPS watches and HR monitors, athletes are able to pinpoint areas for improvement and monitor progress towards their goals.
