Political and economic implications

Pyeongchang in South Korea earned acclaim as an outstanding venue for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games. The city emerged as a sporting, political and socioeconomic centrepoint

The 2018 Winter Olympics host nation won their best medal tally, including gold in the women’s speed skating 3,000 m relay

Pyeongchang benefited materially from hosting the 2018 Winter Olympics. A $10 billion government investment provided a futuristic rail and road infrastructure for the previously poor and remote Gangwon Province. The large crowds had reason to celebrate — an Olympics was staged of the highest quality, furnished with state-of-the-art facilities and presented in a prime location of considerable aesthetic appeal. Pyeongchang was also to become an important political outlet as the competition unfolded.

In terms of sports performance there was much for which Pyeongchang will be remembered. Team GB had particular cause to celebrate. The accomplishment of five medals was the best achieved by Britain. This total fulfilled the minimum target stipulated by UK Sport in return for £28 million of funding to promote winter sports excellence.
