Hosting the 1992 Olympic Games ‘totally transformed’ Barcelona

This article discusses the positive and negative sporting and social impacts on a city or country when hosting a global sporting event, such as the multi-sport Olympic Games and World Cup competitions in single sports. The article is written with OCR A-level candidates in mind but it will be helpful to students who study other exam boards.

Since 1948, nine Olympic hosts have exceeded their medal tally from the previous Olympics. In 2000 China came sixth in the Paralympic table. A year later it was announced that Beijing had been awarded the 2008 Games. Commencing immediate preparations, China responded by topping the medal table at Athens (2004) and has subsequently retained supremacy. Success may be attributed to home-field advantage or extra performance incentive.
