London 2012: the Olympic and Paralymptic Games

UK Athletics

From playground to podium

Andy Paul outlines a range of initiatives by UK Athletics (UKA) to unearth and develop the next generation of athletic talent.

As well as developing a large area of London ready for the 2012 Olympics, UK Athletics is aiming to get more people involved in athletics in time for the event

The Aviva UKA Academy aims to provide sports provision for athletics and give every child in the country the opportunity to get involved in athletics by 2012. The academy aims to engage and attract children of any age, level or ability, from those who want to have fun to those who aspire to be the next Olympic or Paralympic champions. Activities range from teacher training to schools competition, disability athlete recruitment and after-school and holiday programmes.

Each component aims to underpin everything a child needs as they experience athletics as a sport; from school, into the community and beyond. Benefits for those who take part include access to education resources, such as downloadable training programmes that can be used by those considering a career as a PE teacher or sports leader. From a recent survey of teachers, respondents overwhelmingly welcomed the resource, praising its content, value and ease of practical application. Comments included; ‘Very well thought out, great warm-up activities — very impressed’, ‘Very good range of activities for all abilities in PE’, ‘Easy to pick up and use’.
