Studying material properties such as hardness and Young modulus on a small scale can reveal changes that affect the whole material structure. Extending the technique to high temperature requires careful experimental design.

How do dental treatments, such as whitening (Figure 1), affect your teeth? How can we measure the mechanical properties of thin coatings on metal or ceramic components? How can we investigate changes to these properties within a depth of a few microns (see Table 1: 1 micron, or micrometre, μm = 10–6m)?
