Republican Party factions

Far from being a fully united party, Republicans are divided into sub groups or factions (Box 1). These factions are typically ideologically based, often acting as rival groups within the party, each attempting to achieve their own specific policy goals. Factions in Congress are often well organised — with a leader and regular meetings to determine policy priorities and strategy.

Republican factions, sometimes referred to as a caucus (or group), can be categorised in a number of different ways. One way of doing this is to consider four main factions:
