What determines the prime minister’s power?

Ben Fuller provides exam questions and advice for answers in relation to Toby Cooper’s article on pp. 2–5

An essay question on prime ministerial power should be a welcome sight. The question will have identified a ‘contested debate’ — an issue where you can analyse and evaluate clear alternative positions. Remember, most such questions on the prime minister (PM) will also allow you to use your knowledge about other areas of UK government: cabinet, parliament and perhaps the constitution. Make sure to reinforce your argument with examples from your PM case studies. Although this column is about one question each in the style of Edexcel and AQA, the issues involved overlap and could easily be asked about by either exam board.

Evaluate the view that modern prime ministers operate a presidential style of government. (25 marks)
