The Republican Party is a ‘big tent’, with multiple factions existing under the same roof. This has become more evident since the rise of Donald Trump, with a variety of contrasting views fighting to become the most prominent within the party. Some of the key factions are discussed here.

Most prominently represented by former vice president Mike Pence, this group is characterised by its conservative Christian beliefs, seeking to use the Christian faith as a basis for governance. This includes being pro-life, anti-LGBTQ+ and pro-gun rights. The group has had a boost recently with the Dobbs decision in 2022, which reverted the power over abortion to individual states, therefore allowing states to introduce extreme anti-abortion laws. As of April 2023, 13 states had issued complete bans on abortions. These policies are starkly in contrast to those of the moderates, and are causing rifts in the party.
