Clinical psychologist

We asked clinical psychologist Ally Robertson why she chose this career

Ally Robertson

Sorting through some old papers recently, I came across my homework diary from Year 10 at school. At the back were some pages where we had been asked to write suggestions for our chosen career path. I had written ‘social worker’ and ‘psychiatrist’. I realised that I had actually wanted to be something between the two, but didn’t yet know what a clinical psychologist was.

I studied psychology at A-level and really enjoyed it. I found it to be diverse and exciting and I wanted more of it. I can remember at this time seeing a poster on the wall in the corridor outside the psychology classroom presenting a career profile of an assistant psychologist, which is typically someone who has completed a degree and is working to obtain experience before applying for clinical training.
