Film soundtracks shape our perception of characters

You are probably aware of the important role played by the soundtrack in setting a film’s emotional tone. But does the soundtrack affect how we feel about specific characters? This is what Alessandro Asani and colleagues (2020) aimed to explore.

The researchers showed participants a short clip of a man looking out of a window. Some participants heard the ambient noise in the room in which the clip was filmed, while others heard music — either a track called ‘The isle of the dead’ (which the authors describe as a ‘dogged and anxious’ orchestral piece of music), or a track called ‘Like someone in love’ (a ‘soft, melancholic’ piano piece). Participants were asked to rate the man on a variety of measures.
