Lesbian and gay parenting

As family life changes in the age of civil partnerships, the popular press and some commentators still seem to focus on alleged difficulties for children raised by gay and lesbian parents. We investigate these concerns.

Diversity is a key feature of new family forms in the UK and elsewhere, including the growth in the number of gay and lesbian families. However, research from within the fields of sociology (Riggs 2007), social work (Hicks 2006) and psychology (Clarke 2001) has identified a number of popular myths that exist about lesbian and gay families. These include the following assumptions:

■ Lesbian or gay parents actively try to make their children non-heterosexual.
