Families and social policy

In a period of rapid social change how do governments decide which social policies are best for families? This issue becomes an especially pressing and complex one when work is no longer confined to the traditional 9–5 schedule.

In April 2009 The Family Commission set out on a mission to examine the changing face of families in the UK. The purpose was to create a blueprint for providing families with the support they need, and to make sure that the support reflects and caters for the everyday challenges and difficulties today’s family members encounter.

Family life has changed dramatically over the last 30 years, from the structure and relationships within families to the way in which families operate as part of the extended wider community. Changes in social attitudes have led to family structures and caring arrangements for children becoming increasingly complicated.
