In this issue of SOCIOLOGY REVIEW we skim the surface of the massive resource that is YouTube, and in particular the work of Liz Voges, who has developed an excellent suite of YouTube presentations on all sorts of sociological issues. Liz exploits the potential of YouTube to bring you inventive approaches to material that will get you thinking. Her YouTube designation is lizv74 and for quick access to her portfolio just search for ‘functionalist sociology’ on the main page and then load up on the lizv74 option.

One of her techniques is to take some pre-existing material that is sociologically relevant, but not written by a sociologist, and present it with images and music as an exploration on a particular issue. Her latest example at the time of writing was a perspective on the summer riots in English cities in 2011, based on a letter written to the New Statesman by Nick Reeves. This is a distinctive viewpoint on the events and Liz has illustrated it with segments of the letter interspersed with images, all to a background of Iggy Pop’s ‘Lust for Life’. This should start you thinking about the issues that the events bring to the fore of public debate. You may agree or disagree with the position taken by Nick Reeves, but you should be prepared to debate it, drawing on your sociological knowledge and skills to analyse and evaluate the view put forward.
