How religious are European Muslims?

Will Muslims raised in Europe become more secular than their parents? Or will they react against social norms and perceived prejudice by becoming more religious?

You are learning to be a sociologist, so here’s a chance to exercise some sociological imagination. Read the quote below, and then before reading any further try to come up with some reasons why people (like Ishmael) may be more or less religious than their older relatives.

What follows is my own attempt answer this question, based on work I with Fenella Fleischmann from Utrecht University in the Netherlands.
