question and answer

AQA Beliefs in society

Explore an exam-style question on the AQA Beliefs in society option for Topics in sociology

For this paper you have to choose two options from a choice of eight. A third of the total marks on the A-level are available for the paper, fairly evenly split between the different skills: 13% (of the total A-level) for demonstrating knowledge and understanding, 11% for application, and 9% for analysis and evaluation. It is important therefore to keep a balance between these skills in your answer by demonstrating both breadth and depth in your knowledge base, keeping a clear focus on the question and including plenty of discussion, including discussion of strengths and weaknesses to show evaluation skills. Evaluation is particularly important in the longer questions.

The Topics in sociology section of the specification is assessed by a 2-hour paper, leaving you an hour for each option. You would therefore expect to spend up to a quarter of an hour on each 10-mark question and half an hour on each 20-mark question. You should remember that questions 2 and 3 require you to apply material from an Item provided, but others do not.
