How can a small-scale rural development project in a developing country create change?

Girls outside Thandigudi Home

In October 2007 I travelled to southern India with my school to complete the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award. We visited a small-scale rural development project run by Goodwill Children’s Homes: a non-governmental organisation (NGO) working in the Tamil Nadu region of southern India. We taught at a Goodwill home for 5 days, then went on to complete a trek in the western Ghat mountains. The welcome when we arrived at the Goodwill village was overwhelming and I was so glad to have the opportunity to share this way of life, if only for 5 days.

Before leaving the UK we had spent a year organising fundraising events and had raised over £15,000 for the charity. This money helped towards providing classrooms, sports and teaching equipment and building water pumps.
