The geology that shapes our landscapes

T he British Isles, for its size, has some of the most varied landscapes anywhere on Earth. Scratch beneath the surface and the reason for this becomes apparent when you see the huge variety of rocks on which these islands are built. These rocks produce dramatic landscape features.

Go to the British Geological Society website at www.bgs.ac.uk and from the upper menu bar select <Discovering geology>. From the list click <Geology of Britain>, then from the left menu select <Geology of Britain viewer> and click on the map or the button ‘Open Geology of Britain viewer’.
